In today’s article, I want to discuss the amazing benefit of consuming “negative calories” – and explain to you how consuming more of these 10 foods can speed up your fat loss.
You see – not every food is created equal and not every calorie is burned equally in your body! This is the amazing thing about “negative calories.”
The “negative calorie effect” means that consuming one of these foods actually helps your body burn more calories than it's taking in from the food itself due to the fact the food improves your metabolism, increases energy, slows down blood sugar, and is rich in water and fiber content.
Since your body takes much longer to burn off fibrous foods, your metabolism stays revved up and you become a fat burning machine making weight loss a piece of cake! (Sorry but cake is not 1 of these negative calorie foods!)
To make this really easy to understand you have to consider that there is a certain “caloric cost” to digesting certain types of food, which in the case of these 10 foods is greater than the food energy content (aka calorie).
I recommend eating as many of these “negative calorie” foods as possible and I also offer you a simple snack/meal idea for each of these.
10 Incredible Negative Calorie Sources to Speed up Fat Loss!
1. Organic Apples
Apples are one of the foods you should be buying “organic” since you are eating the skin on the apple. Speaking of the skin on an apple – it contains 3-5 grams of fiber making them a perfect “negative calorie” source. Apples are very low in total
Apples are very low in total calories and loaded with fiber, water, and nutrition.
Apples have considerably fewer calories and total sugar than Bananas with way more fiber.
An apple a day certainly ignites the fat burning machine!
If you want a super decadent snack that is actually weight loss friendly, try spreading 1 tbsp. of creamy almond butter or peanut butter onto your apple slices. Just don’t let the nut butter get carried away as it contains almost 100 calories per tbsp. – so you are best to limit your intake to 1 total tbsp. when striving to accelerate fat loss!
2. Black Beans
Did you know that 1 cup of Black beans contains almost 30 grams of fiber and 40 grams of protein? Although there are a lot of carbs in black beans – the fact that they are loaded with fiber and protein makes them a much better weight loss carb vs. rice, potatoes, and pasta.
The fiber from consuming black beans will improve your metabolism and keep you full for a very long period of time.
Consuming 200 calories from black beans can have a thermogenic effect on your body as the calories needed to digest as well as the amount of time it keeps you full add up to make this a great “negative calorie” food.
3. Broccoli
Broccoli is at the top of the list of “negative calorie” foods as it’s a nutritional powerhouse and has a ton of fiber.
It is literally impossible to store body fat from eating too much broccoli as it has a very low amount of calories and is super high in fiber.
Try steaming your broccoli and putting fresh garlic, lemon juice, and pepper on it for a zero calorie superfood side dish!
4. Cabbage
Cabbage is another incredible source of vitamin C and fiber. It also has powerful hormone effects and can help remove estrogen from your body, a fat storage hormone.
Try your cabbage steamed with a little bit of olive oil, garlic, and black pepper on it – or consume it raw in a delicious superfoods salad!
Either way, the more cabbage you eat the faster you will lose weight!
5. Cauliflower
Not only is Cauliflower considered the “white knight” in protecting your body from cancer, but it can really boost weight loss with its incredibly high fiber, water, and nutrition content!
One of my favorite low-calorie treats is a cauliflower pizza. You can actually make delicious cauliflower pizza and it tastes extremely close to the real thing when you bake it!
Another way to enjoy cauliflower is to enjoy it steamed or use it raw in a salad.

6. Celery
Celery is the ultimate weight loss superfood as it is basically like eating crunchy water packed with fiber and vitamins.
Celery does an incredible job of keeping you full and boosting your metabolism if you snack on it raw.
You can make a good high fiber treat if you spread peanut butter and sprinkle hemp seeds on a celery stalk. Once again, just remember to keep the peanut butter in moderation!
7. Grapefruit
Ever hear of the grapefruit diet? Grapefruit is considerably lower in calories than oranges and has powerful fat loss properties.
One of the best aspects about grapefruit on a calorie restricted diet is that it helps you reduce your craving for salty foods like potato chips, which can wreak havoc on your waistline and metabolism!
Next time you are craving something salty, try a delicious and juicy grapefruit instead to get your body in a “negative calorie” state!
8. Kidney Beans
Kidney Beans contain up to 20 grams of fiber per serving and are an antioxidant powerhouse. I recommend consuming kidney beans anytime you are craving starchy carbohydrates. One really delicious kidney bean recipe is to sprinkle fresh garlic and Hot Sauce on them!
The cayenne pepper from the hot sauce helps to boost your metabolism, and is a great complement with the high-fiber legume!
Kidney beans are considered a “slow carb” – meaning your body will take a very long time to digest them.
9. Lentils
If you happen to be a vegetarian or vegan you should be consuming as many lentils as possible! Lentils are the highest protein legume and contain a ton of fiber.
If you add up the total protein + total fiber content of lentils – they actually exceed both kidney beans and black beans!
I recommend 3-4 servings of lentils per week on any fat loss diet. One great thing you can do is make home-made lentil soup with low sodium veggie broth!
10. Spinach
There is nothing healthier on a fat loss diet than a delicious spinach salad! Spinach is the ultimate superfood as it contains a ton of fiber, iron, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
The best part is that 1 cup of spinach only contains about 10 calories, and your body will use much more than 10 calories to digest all the fiber and nutrients!
Anytime I am cutting I try to consume 1 cup of raw spinach leaves every day and top it with a lean protein source like grilled chicken or fish.
What do you think of these 10 “negative calorie” foods? Make sure you give a few of these a try to speed up your fat loss results!
