We all love food, because, well food tastes awesome, and I know I speak for most people too when I say we love a bargain. But just because an upsize on your takeout meal is free or that king size chocolate bar is only 10cents more than the regular doesn't mean we should opt for it. Too often I see people being suckered into this because its a great “deal”, but is it really a better deal for our health? Is it really necessary to have a large meal or a king-size bar when you would have been satisfied with a small?
So you like chocolate? So do I!
I just try to limit my consumption, so instead of having a whole block, I will have a snack size bar. I try not to keep blocks of chocolate in my house for the simple fact that once i start eating it I find it difficult to stop, so instead of always having chocolate available I just buy a bar when I feel like eating it, that way once my craving has been satisfied I don't have the temptation of going back to the cupboard for more.
Its the same with all the foods I love. Except for ice-cream, I always have that in the house.
Life is too short to cut out food groups and deprive yourself of the things you like, but the key is moderation. Just because you like cake, doesn't mean you need to eat a whole one.
Skipping meals also has a lot to do with portion control too. I know that if I haven't eaten for a while and then sit down to a meal the chances of me over eating are higher. I try to always take healthy snacks like protein bars/shakes, nuts or fruit with me when I go out, that way if I'm hungry I can have something little which will stop me from over eating when I have my next proper meal.
When I am eating at home or preparing meals to take with me they are always measured and weighed which ensures that I am only eating the food that i have accounted for in my calories.
If you're eating pre-packaged/portioned food then make sure you read the back of the packet to make sure of the portion size. A lot of foods that come in packaging will seem to be only one portion per pack, but if you read the back it can actually be two servings, and an extra serving you have unknowingly eaten is never usually welcome.
